Causes
Targets of workplace bullying are usually people who pose a perceived threat to the bully. The targets are also usually better liked by others, possess better social skills, and are usually more intelligent than the person bullying them (Workplace Bullying Institute, n.d.).

Causes
· Workplace bullying “encompasses a power relationship, whether vested in organizational hierarchies, interpersonal dynamics, or both, that has crossed the line and become abusive” (Yamada, 2008, para.11).
· Some causes can be attributed to personality traits of the bully, while other causes can be related to the structure and management styles within a company (Neyens & De Witte, 2011).
· There are several factors in the workplace that are viewed as causes, or contributing factors of bullying. One of the most common causes is the emphasis that is placed upon a competitive work environment by management personnel (Alsever, 2008).
· According to Yamada (2008), “the growth of the service sector economy and the dynamics of high-pressure corporate work environments have combined to fuel the likelihood that workplace bullying will occur with greater frequency” ( para. 22).
· Another common factor that has been linked as a cause of workplace bullying is when employers establish unreasonable goals and demands for both managers and employees (Alsever, 2008).
· Corporate downsizing has become another factor that can be attributed to workplace bullying. The uncertain work environment that is caused by downsizing and layoffs can lead employees and managers alike to become aggressive towards others (Yamada, 2008).
· Other factors such as management style, lack of authority from management, and setting impossible deadlines can also contribute to bullying in the workplace (Alsever, 2008).
